Ponto Jetty Warm Winter Sunset 1-05-2015
Ponto Jetty in South Carlsbad on January 5, 2015. The warm weather and pending sunset, brought many down to the beach. Not enough swell to surf, just barely breaking.
Winter is the "off season" for beach going in Southern California, but the warmest winter in recorded history has kept the beaches busy. Extra lifeguard towers are moved back from the beach for storage during the winter when our biggest swells and beach sand erosion are most likely to occur. "The shop" sits at the south end of the far bluff, on the edge of the South Carlsbad State Beach campgrounds. The shop is the base station for the State Beach lifeguards. It was my base when I was a student working as a lifeguard to help pay for my college education, more than a couple of decades ago.
Sunset run on the beach, North Leucadia, CA January 2015
Something was wrong with this guy. All the dirt is from a hole he was digging on the coastal bluff above the border between Leucadia and Carlsbad. The hole was about 3 feet from the edge of the bluff, and will only contribute to the bluff's premature failure in the very near future in this area. When I attempted to speak with him, he ignored me. Perhaps its my youthful experience as a Lifeguard when I would ask people to stay off sensitive beach bluffs so they wouldn't erode that emboldened me to ask him to stop. My words were wasted, and he kept digging.
